When you are abroad, you can still use your phone in the same way that you do when you're in the UK. This is called 'Roaming.' However, you must make sure that you have activated the 'Calling from abroad' or 'Roaming' service in 'My Account' before you travel.
To activate Roaming in 'My Account', you must sign up to the Automatic Top-up online service with a debit card. We recommend that you activate Roaming at least 24 hours before you leave the UK, to ensure that it is fully activated and ready for you to use while travelling.
Please note: Prices vary from country to country, so please look at our Roaming Prices to see how much it will cost for you to make calls and send text messages while you're abroad.
Using Voicemail while abroad
If you want to retrieve your Voicemail messages while you're abroad, you will need to use a Voicemail PIN number. To set up a Voicemail PIN number, call your Voicemail from your mobile before you leave, press '2', then '1', and follow the instructions. When you call your Voicemail, either remotely in the UK or from abroad, you will hear your own greeting. This can be interrupted at any time by pressing the # key. You will then be prompted to enter your PIN number.
Charges for receiving Voicemail while abroad
Anyone calling you while you are abroad will only pay for a standard UK mobile call. You will be charged, at International rates, for the part of the call that transfers from the UK to your location.
If you do not answer the call, you will be charged for the call to be diverted to Voicemail at the Roaming rate applicable to the country you are in.
An additional charge will also be applied for the outbound call to retrieve the Voicemail message, at the Roaming rate applicable to the country you are in.
How to activate: You can activate this service through 'My Account.' - Click on the 'Manage Services' button on the Account overview and add the International Roaming service. Please not that you must have Automatic Top-up enabled before this service is available for activation.
